Peptides are short chains of amino acids. In a research catalog, that usually means a named sequence sold as a laboratory compound, often as a freeze-dried (lyophilized) powder in a sealed vial, with paperwork that ties the vial to a production lot.
This article is a plain-language orientation to research peptides: what they are, how they are typically documented, and what research-use-only means on a product label. It is educational. It is not medical, veterinary, or protocol advice.
What a peptide is
Amino acids link into chains. Short chains are called peptides; longer folded chains are proteins. Synthetic research peptides are made in a laboratory so a buyer can order a specific sequence at a stated labeled mass of lyophilized powder.
A product name such as BPC-157, TB-500, or GHK-Cu refers to a particular sequence or complex. The label and the lot paperwork should agree on what is in the vial. Identity testing is how an independent lab checks that agreement. A paper on reference standards for synthetic peptide quality describes analytical tests that establish identity, purity, and strength for those materials (McCarthy et al., 2023, Pharmaceutical Research).
Why related impurities matter
Synthesis rarely yields a single clean species. A review of related impurities in peptide medicines lists deleted, inserted, or mirror-image amino acids, leftover protecting groups, oxidation, and dimers or larger assemblies (D'Hondt et al., 2014, Journal of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analysis). Those species can sit beside the intended sequence in the same powder.
Trifluoroacetate is another common part of the weighed mass. Trifluoroacetic acid is widely used in cleavage and purification, so synthetic peptides are often obtained as trifluoroacetate salts (Erckes et al., 2025, Pharmaceuticals). Counterion content adds weight without being a related peptide impurity. Purity assignment work on an angiotensin II reference material put trifluoroacetic acid at a large share of the sample mass (Melanson et al., 2018, Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry). That is why a high purity figure and a high peptide-by-weight figure are not the same claim.
Why research peptides often ship dry
Many peptides are sold as lyophilized powder rather than as a liquid. Water can speed some of the chemical reactions that break peptides down. Reviews of solid-state stability and of lyophilization describe the dry solid form as a way to stabilize peptides and proteins over a shelf life, and freeze-drying as a common manufacturing route for solid protein pharmaceuticals (Lai and Topp, 1999, Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences; Wang, 2000, International Journal of Pharmaceutics).
That practice is about chemical stability in storage and transit. It is not guidance for how a laboratory later handles the material. A dry vial is still only as informative as its documentation. Lyophilization does not replace identity or purity testing.
What a certificate of analysis reports
A certificate of analysis (COA) is a report on one production lot. A useful COA typically includes:
- The lot number that matches the vial
- An identity result confirming that the named compound is present
- A purity result from a chromatographic method
- The laboratory that performed the work
Purity percentages describe related material in the analytical window the method covers. They do not by themselves establish absolute peptide content, and they say nothing about approved medical or veterinary use. For a deeper walkthrough of those lines, see our quality page, which links lot reports for catalog compounds.
Why independent testing still matters
Peer-reviewed audits of peptides sold by illegal online sellers found large gaps between label claims and measured contents. A Belgian laboratory reported purity from 5% to 75% for falsified cysteine-containing peptide drugs, plus elemental contaminants in some samples (Janvier et al., 2018, Talanta). A 2024 test-purchase study of semaglutide vials from illegal pharmacies measured purity far below the claimed figure and detected endotoxin in every sample received (Ashraf et al., 2024, Journal of Medical Internet Research).
Those audits do not grade a research catalog. They show why a lot-specific report from a named laboratory is part of ordinary purchasing hygiene for research reagents.
Research use only
Pure Pet Peptide supplies peptides for laboratory research use only. They are not for human or veterinary use. They have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. Buyers must be 18 or older.
If you need compounds for a laboratory protocol, shop the research catalog. Every lot is third-party tested for identity and purity and ships with its certificate of analysis. Compounds are synthesized in a US lab. For the testing story and downloadable COAs, see Quality.
Asked often
What is a research peptide?
A research peptide is a short chain of amino acids supplied as a laboratory research compound. Sellers typically document identity and purity for a named production lot. Quality for synthetic peptides is judged through analytical tests that establish those attributes (McCarthy et al., 2023, Pharmaceutical Research). Research peptides are not approved drugs and are not for human or veterinary use.
Why do research peptides ship as a freeze-dried powder?
Many peptides are more chemically stable as a dry solid than in water. Reviews describe the dry solid form as a way to stabilize peptides and proteins over a shelf life, and freeze-drying as a common way to make solid protein pharmaceuticals (Lai and Topp, 1999, Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences; Wang, 2000, International Journal of Pharmaceutics). A dry vial still needs lot documentation; dryness alone does not establish identity or purity.
What does a certificate of analysis show?
A certificate of analysis (COA) is a laboratory report on one production lot. Useful COAs name the lot, the identity method, and a purity result. Purity assignment work on peptide reference materials shows why water and counterions can sit outside a purity percentage (Melanson et al., 2018, Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry). A COA describes the powder in the vial. It does not make a compound an approved drug.
What does research use only mean?
Research-use-only (RUO) means the material is supplied for laboratory research. It is not for human or veterinary use. Pure Pet Peptide products have not been evaluated by the FDA. Buyers must be 18 or older. Lot paperwork and purity results support purchasing decisions for laboratory reagents. They do not authorize use outside that research setting.
